Marugame Uchiwa DIY Craft Kits

“Marugame Uchiwa” is a traditional craft from Kagawa. This is a handmade fan that you can decorate with your favorite colors and patterns. You can freely express your creativity using washi paper, masking tape, pens, and paint. (It will be delivered blank, ready for you to decorate.)

The base fan is a mini-koban shape, making it easy to carry. Each one is handcrafted individually by Keiko Hyodo, a certified traditional craftsman. Of the total production of Marugame Uchiwa, traditional bamboo fans account for only about 10 percent. Furthermore, of those, only a mere few percent are made entirely in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture—from material harvesting to processing—making them extremely rare.

This DIY kit is designed for children, of course, but we especially hope adults will enjoy it too.
Why not try making your very own original fan?

◯ Marugame Uchiwa
"Marugame Uchiwa" started as a souvenir for visiting Konpira in the Edo period, and was recommended by the Kyogoku Clan at that time as a side job for samurai, it developed into a representative local industry of Marugame,It was designated as a national traditional craft in May 1997. Marugame, where many uchiwa-making craftsmen used to live, uchiwa-making orders came in from all over the country, and the uniqueness of Uchiwa from each production area was combined. As a result, Marugame Uchiwa, which has acquired many features, now boasts 90% of the domestic market share and is Japan's largest in terms of production volume and variety of shapes.
