Paper Mache Lighthouse and Setouchi Sanbon Set

“Mitoyo Chagami,” a traditional craft from Kagawa. This is a handmade papier-mâché figure that you can decorate with your favorite colors and patterns. Feel free to use washi paper, masking tape, pens, and paint to create your own design. (Delivered in its unpainted state)

The base papier-mâché figure, shaped like a lighthouse, is handcrafted one by one using hand-made washi paper sourced from historical documents and other materials. Its warm, soft form is so endearing that you’ll grow attached to it just by looking at it. Since the interior is hollow, you can remove the top and use it to store small items.

This craft kit is designed for children, of course, but we especially hope adults will enjoy it too.

◯ About Mitoyo Papier-mâché
A papier-mâché workshop in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, has been crafting papier-mâché tigers since Meiji 30, and in Showa 61, they were designated as a Traditional Craft of Kagawa Prefecture. Through continuous refinement of materials and techniques, and by performing every step by hand, the artisans strive to create “sturdy tigers that will be cherished for generations.”
Prized since ancient times as decorations for the Boys’ Festival and the Hassaku Festival, these tigers symbolize wishes for children’s healthy growth. They are also popular as regional toys, gifts for birthdays and new homes, and as good-luck charms for business prosperity.
